Home Health Medicare Requirements

In order for a beneficiary to be eligible covered home health care services under Medicare Part A, the law requires that a physician certify in all cases that the beneficiary is confined to his/her home. However, the condition of the patient to be such there exists a normal inability to leave home and, consequently, leaving their home would require a taxing effort.

Homebound criteria is met when:

Any absence of an individual from the home attributable to the need to receive health care treatment.Adult day-care program The absence is of an infrequent or of a relatively short duration. Absence because of religious purposes. Special family occasions such as: reunions, graduations or funerals.

Home bound criteria is not met when:

Frequent absences from the home are for social reasons, for shopping or business purposes. Patient drives car.
